Resource Management Librarian—Collection Development

Lane Medical Library & Knowledge Management Center (www.lane.stanford.edu) at Stanford University Medical Center enables biomedical discovery by connecting people with knowledge. Through innovative means, we create, acquire, deliver, and integrate information to support excellence in research, education, and patient care. Lane Medical Library seeks qualified applicants to fill the position of resource management librarian—collection development. Reporting to the director for resource management, the focus of this position is to participate in and facilitate Lane’s collaborative effort to provide optimal access to the most appropriate resources when and where needed. This involves the many aspects of evaluating, selecting, and activating digital resources; managing their deployment for discovery and access; and ensuring ongoing availability and problem resolution. It includes the use of innovative technologies and procedures for effective management and to lessen or eliminate barriers to access, while considering fiscal, technical, and policy constraints.

Required: Master’s of library science or equivalent. Three or more years’ experience in resource management: collection development, serials control, digital content acquisition and management, and related areas. Knowledge of current content delivery platforms and software products, user interfaces, and resource management systems related to the responsibilities indicated for this position. Knowledge of the information industry, scholarly communication, especially content delivery challenges, publishing models, and open access trends. Strong communications skills, including oral and written, and ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies. Demonstrated supervisory skills. Thorough understanding of the bibliographic apparatus, both from data management and user access perspectives, and how this relates to the design of system interfaces.

Preferred: Interest in and potential for growth, in broader aspects of resource management. Knowledge of academic health sciences, preferably including related subject expertise.

Note: This is an 80% FTE position, with full benefits.

Assistant Professor & Assistant Information Services and Clinical Librarian (Tenure Track)

The University of Illinois–Chicago (UIC) Library of the Health Sciences seeks a clinical librarian for its information services department. The clinical librarian serves as an information expert for the University of Illinois Hospital staff including residents, faculty, attending physicians, nurses, and students. The clinical librarian will attend hospital rounds, morning report, and evidence- based health care teaching sessions. Building on a collaborative relationship with clinicians, the librarian will provide immediate information as requested using current technology and resources. The librarian will be called upon to collaborate with researchers on journal clubs, seminars, systematic literature review projects, and other clinical forums. The librarian will be embedded within several hospital departments. In addition, the librarian will perform general library services including: p articipating in evidence-based health care initiatives, providing general reference services including web-based reference and research consultations, offering instructional services, developing and managing relevant research and subject guides using the LibGuides system, serving on relevant library committees, and providing staff development to support further expansion of librarians in the clinical arena

Required: Master’s degree in library science from an ALA-accredited program, 2 years’ professional experience in either a hospital library or an academic health sciences library or equivalent professional experience, interest in implementing emerging technologies in health education, excellent presentation and relationship building skills, understanding of evidence-based practice, ability to think and react quickly in an intense clinical environment, and a high level of analytical and searching skills. A health sciences background is preferred. Hours are mainly from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and may include some weekends and evenings.

Biomedical and Translational Science Librarian

Wayne State University’s (WSU’s) Shiffman Medical Library is looking for a biomedical and translational research librarian to expand the library’s role in supporting and participating in basic and clinical biomedical research initiatives, determining and proactively meeting the educational and research needs of faculty; to develop educational and research-related aids for researchers in such areas as molecular medicine and genetics, biomedical physics, nanobioscience, cell biology and cytogenetics, and neurobiology; and to provide liaison services in support of the WSU Division of Research, and its institutes, centers, and core facilities related to biomedical sciences, translational initiatives, and associated clinical science departments at the WSU School of Medicine.

Required: ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information science; 2–5 years of experience as a professional librarian in a biomedical research facility or a health sciences library, serving a strong research faculty as well.

Preferred: Substantial experience working with bioscience and physiochemical information sources, undergraduate degree in a biomedical or physical science, graduate-level coursework or graduate degree, and demonstrated commitment to public service. In extraordinary cases, we will consider an individual with a demonstrated and sustained interest in library service and who has a PhD in a biomedical or physical science, and expresses interest in completing an ALA-approved master of library science degree.
