MLANET Style Guide

Graphics

Use alt tags for all graphics. To use any of the following graphics files, right click on one and save the .GIF or .JPG file directly to your hard disk. Or see the Downloads page to download a zip file with all of the MLANET graphics, plus original Photoshop files for some items.

To Top of Page

To top of page = return to top of page

Use on pages with internal index box. Also use for long pages. Whenever possible break long documents into several separate Web pages with a thorough index page. When a long document is necessary, include this return to top graphic to the right of each subhead. Add one character space. Include the graphic within a paragraph setting to keep the margins aligned. All MLANET pages include a "top" anchor to support this element.

To Top Level

Up a level = go to top level of this area.

Use in the navigation bar to the right of the body copy block. Within any given directory, this graphic on all pages should return to the index page of that directory. This graphic on index pages should go to the index page of the next directory up, which is often the home page.

Go to Enter Data

go = go to scripted page.

Use to instruct visitors when to enter data, such as a log-in box or a search engine.

Horizontal Rule

On MLANET, use z_hr.html (ssi file).
If no SSIs, use: Width = 90%; Height = 1 pt. (no shade, centered)
Use to divide subhead areas.

Navigation Menu

Download

Use to indicate that a file is available for visitors to download. Include the file type and size in parentheses.

New

New! = new graphic
new_jag.gif (1K graphic file)
Use to draw attention to new items on a Web page. Remember to remove "new" highlights regularly, too.

New! = animated new graphic
nw_anm2.gif (7K graphic file)
Use on the home page to draw attention to new areas of the site. The animation cycles three times and then stops. Do not overuse this or other animation files; they can be distracting and slow download time.
